The path to March is often shaped long before conference play begins, and Iowa State’s upcoming non-conference schedule appears designed to do exactly that. With a mix of quality opponents, neutral-site showcases, rivalry games, and a major early-season tournament, the Cyclones will have numerous opportunities to strengthen their NCAA Tournament résumé before the rugged Big 12 schedule even starts.

The season begins with a challenging neutral-site matchup against Memphis at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls. Memphis has consistently been one of the top programs outside the power conferences, making it an excellent early test and a potential Quad 1 opportunity.

From there, Iowa State returns to Hilton Coliseum for a series of home games that should allow the Cyclones to continue developing chemistry while building momentum. However, the schedule quickly ramps up again with a marquee home contest against Purdue, one of the premier programs in college basketball under Matt Painter. The Boilermakers have once again assembled a challenging schedule and will provide Iowa State with a high-profile non-conference measuring stick.

The annual Cy-Hawk showdown against Iowa on the road remains one of the most anticipated games on the schedule. Regardless of rankings or records, rivalry games often carry significant weight and provide another valuable road test for the Cyclones.

Perhaps the most intriguing portion of the schedule comes during Thanksgiving week at the Players Era Festival in Las Vegas. The event is expected to feature some of the nation’s top programs and guarantees Iowa State multiple opportunities to face high-level competition on a national stage. Tournament settings like this often resemble the NCAA Tournament environment, making them invaluable preparation for March while also creating opportunities for résumé-enhancing victories.

Another noteworthy neutral-site matchup comes in Kansas City when Iowa State takes on Missouri State in the Hall of Fame Classic. While Missouri State may not carry the national reputation of some other opponents, neutral-court games are never easy and add another unique challenge to the schedule.

What makes this non-conference slate particularly appealing is its balance. Iowa State has enough home games to build confidence and continuity, but the schedule also includes multiple opponents and venues that should help strengthen the team’s NCAA Tournament profile. Between Memphis, Purdue, Iowa, and the potential matchups awaiting in Las Vegas, the Cyclones could accumulate several quality wins before opening Big 12 play.

That is important because the Big 12 remains one of the toughest conferences in college basketball. Entering league play with a strong résumé already in place can provide a significant advantage when Selection Sunday arrives. Rather than relying solely on conference results, Iowa State has the chance to establish itself nationally during November and December.

For a program with Final Four aspirations, this schedule is exactly what fans should want to see: challenging enough to prepare the team for March, yet balanced enough to build confidence and accumulate victories. If the Cyclones capitalize on their opportunities, they could enter Big 12 play not only with an impressive record but also with one of the strongest résumés in the country.
