For years, Iowa State men’s basketball has built its success through player development, culture, and strategic use of the transfer portal. Under head coach TJ Otzelberger, however, the Cyclones are proving they can win recruiting battles against some of the biggest names in college basketball as well.

The latest proof? Iowa State’s 2027 recruiting class is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by multiple recruiting services, marking a historic achievement for the program.

The foundation of the class was established with the commitment of Iowa native Josiah Harrington, one of the top-ranked players in the country and one of the highest-rated recruits ever to commit to Iowa State. Harrington gave the Cyclones an early cornerstone and sent a message that elite prospects believe in the direction of the program.

That momentum reached another level when four-star forward Donovan Davis announced his commitment to Iowa State. Davis, regarded as one of the top players in the nation and one of the highest-rated recruits in program history, chose the Cyclones over numerous high-major programs. His commitment vaulted Iowa State to the top of the national team rankings and further validated the recruiting efforts of Otzelberger and his staff.

The class became even stronger with the recent addition of Wisconsin standout Jack Kohnen. Ranked among the nation’s top prospects, Kohnen selected Iowa State over a lengthy list of major conference offers, adding another highly talented player to an already loaded group.

What makes this accomplishment especially impressive is that Iowa State is competing with traditional recruiting powers such as Kansas Jayhawks, Kentucky Wildcats, and Duke Blue Devils for elite talent. The Cyclones have climbed to the top through relationships, player development, and a culture that recruits clearly want to be part of.

The rise of Iowa State recruiting is no accident. Since arriving in Ames, Otzelberger has transformed the perception of the program nationally. Hilton Coliseum remains one of the toughest environments in college basketball, the Cyclones continue to contend in the nation’s toughest conference, and players see a clear path to development and success. As a result, Iowa State is no longer simply competing for highly ranked recruits—it is landing them.

While recruiting rankings in June of 2026 are far from final, the fact that Iowa State sits atop the national rankings speaks volumes about the trajectory of the program. The Cyclones have positioned themselves not only to compete for Big 12 championships today, but also to sustain that success well into the future.

For Cyclone Nation, the message is simple: Iowa State basketball has become a destination program. And with the nation’s No. 1 recruiting class leading the way, the future in Ames has never looked brighter.
