The 2025-26 season was another successful campaign for Iowa State under head coach T.J. Otzelberger, as the Cyclones advanced to the Sweet 16 and established themselves as one of the nation’s premier programs. While Iowa State must replace stars Tamin Lipsey, Joshua Jefferson, Nate Heise, and Milan Momcilovic, the cupboard is far from bare. The Cyclones return a talented group of players who gained valuable experience last season and will be asked to carry the program forward in 2026-27.
Blake Buchanan Becomes the Anchor
The most experienced returning player is 6-foot-11 center Blake Buchanan. After transferring from Virginia before last season, Buchanan developed into a reliable presence in the paint, averaging 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. With the departures of Jefferson and Heise, Buchanan is expected to become one of the team’s leaders while providing Iowa State with size, rebounding, and interior defense.
If Iowa State is going to remain among the Big 12 contenders, Buchanan’s growth into an All-Big 12 caliber center will be a major factor.
Killyan Toure Ready for a Breakout
One of the most exciting returning players is sophomore guard Killyan Toure. The French freshman showed flashes of brilliance throughout the season, averaging 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. His athleticism, length, and ability to play multiple positions make him a perfect fit for Otzelberger’s system.
With Lipsey graduating, Toure will likely be given a much larger role in the offense. Cyclone fans should expect him to become one of the team’s primary playmakers and a potential breakout star in the Big 12.
Jamarion Batemon’s Time Has Arrived
Freshman guard Jamarion Batemon gained valuable experience during his first season in Ames and now appears ready for a larger role. Batemon averaged 6.6 points per game while showcasing the scoring ability that made him a highly regarded recruit.
His combination of quickness, shot creation, and confidence should help fill some of the offensive production lost with the departure of Iowa State’s veteran stars.
Dominykas Looking to Take the Next Step
The Cyclones also return several young players who spent last season developing within the program. Dominykas Pleta gained valuable experience and now has the opportunity to compete for larger role in the rotation. Pleta’s development will be critical as Iowa State looks to maintain the depth that has become a trademark under Otzelberger.
A New Chapter in Ames
Replacing the leadership and production of Lipsey, Jefferson, and Momcilovic will not be easy. Together, they formed the backbone of one of the most successful stretches in program history, earning multiple All-Big 12 honors and helping Iowa State become a national contender.
However, Iowa State basketball has reached a point where success is built on development, culture, and continuity. With Buchanan leading the frontcourt, Toure and Batemon poised for expanded roles, and another talented recruiting class joining the program, the Cyclones have the pieces to remain among the Big 12’s top teams.
The faces may be different, but expectations in Ames remain the same: compete for championships, defend Hilton Coliseum, and make deep run in March.
